Friends who know me well outside of my work life sometimes think of me in terms of being perpetually childish in my interests. I love hand-held foods (chicken strips are a favorite, as are french fries), and more than occasionally, I’m intrigued by children’s books as much as by those written for adults. Generally speaking, if my nieces are getting a book as a gift from me, I’m likely to have read it before they receive it.
That said, it’s not surprising that I have been looking forward with great anticipation for R. W. Metlen’s new release, Ewe. This wonderfully-illustrated and touching book is designed for adults with the Sacrament of Reconciliation in mind.
This wondeful allegory talks about the relationship between Ewe and his shepherd, David. Like Ewe, we are loved by a wonderfully giving and caring shepherd, our God. And like Ewe, we find ourselves being our own worst enemy, though we may try to believe that there are many other, more dangerous creatures and things outside of us trying to get at our hearts.
Consider using this book with a faith formation group as they discuss the sacraments. It would also be a very handy tool for a youth ministry function or workshop. In some groups, it could even be used with younger children to help them understand the importance of Reconciliation, as well as the God who loves each of us dearly.
