Although I often consider myself a kid at heart, I’m a little out of my element when looking at kids’ films. That’s why I rely on my nieces to help me figure out what to write about.
Sometime around two years ago, I decided to get myself a copy of Bernadette: Princess of Lourdes, a 30-minute cartoon published by the Creative Communications Center. With fun and joyful artistry, the film helps young people (and kids at heart, like me) to learn about St. Bernadette.
Beginning in February of 1858, Bernadette Soubirous was witness to visions of Our Lady. It is in this series of apparitions that Bernadette learns that Mary is The Immaculate Conception. This is what both inspires and challenges the notion of to whom the Kingdom of God is revealed.
You may recognize the style of art in this. There are several films in the series, including one that has been near to my heart since I was about 8 years old, The Day the Sun Danced.
I was sure of my nieces’ reaction to the film when I took my copy of the DVD back to my place. My nieces began asking where it was the following week, when they visited their grandmother’s house. With that in mind, I ended up buying them a copy to keep at their grandma’s as long as they wanted.
