Last year, I discovered a book while racing through a catalog from one of our major publishing houses, and requested a sample of it. Do One Nice Thing was all about finding the small things we can do for one another, ourselves, and the Earth. Really simple things.
For example, did you know you can recycle those used-up gift cards? There’s an organization that takes them, melts them down, and uses the plastic for new cards. (I think of all the Starbucks cards I get…and how easy it is to put the balance on one card, then let the others go to be recycled–rather than letting the baristas throw them away.)
How about at Christmas? Those letters to Santa Claus that may never be read can actually be requested by an individual. Similar to the “giving trees” you may have seen at church or the mall, you get a letter, buy the gift, and drop it off at the post office.
Well, my friends, there is a new book out by a Catholic publisher that follows the same principle. In 5001 Simple Things to do for Others (and Yourself), the editors at Liguori Publications have compiled a great list of easy-to-do things for everyone, whether you are 5 or 95!
Whether you are crafty, playful, like to travel, or just enjoy staying around the neighborhood, this book is FULL of ideas. Until we begin doing good for others (and ourselves), we cannot really know the impact of our actions. Our little gestures of kindness may be the bright spot in someone’s day–or week. In addition, we may spark thought or kindness for others, just by being nice.
Some of the ideas here are short, while others are a little more in depth. Regardless, this would serve as a great jumping-off place for Confirmation service projects, youth ministry programs, families, or small faith-sharing groups. Whether you (and your group) decide to take the ideas listed directly, or build from them, you can make a difference. As Blessed Teresa of Calcutta (a.k.a. Mother Teresa) is well-known to have said, “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.”
As a personal challenge to individuals during the very-near Lenten season, I encourage you to get together with a few friends and try out some of these ideas! See if you can sacrifice a little of yourself and do a little extra niceness for those around you. Encourage your parish to post opportunities to get involved or ideas for the week in the bulletin. All in all, the biggest thing we can do is try to make a difference, starting with something simple.
